Bird
Waiting
Can be more dangerous
Than faking the answer
To a geometry question.
Consider of those
Who drowned at sea
How many others successfully
Skirted the Straits of Magellan.
Instant heroes.
We will always remember them.
But yesterday,
While I watched from my window
In a driving rain,
A tiny bird,
Feathers twisted,
Wings bent,
Struggling to make its way home,
Faltered and fell to the ground.
I ran outside and fetched what remained.
Breast still beating,
Body still warm,
There it died
Cupped in my hands
Away from the rain
Lost in a slice of time.
