My Thoughts at 3 This Morning
My recent experience with the medical system has convinced me that it bears an uncanny resemblance to the famous comedy sketch of Abbott and Costello. The difference is that the comedy sketch is about a game while the medical system is a matter of life and death. The medical system is governed by a set of arcane bureaucratic rules that seem designed to torture and frustrate those whose lives depend upon it. Plagued by overburdened practitioners, supplied by corporations focused on profits, and delivered through a bureaucratic system that delays and obfuscates, any reasonable person can’t help but ask: “What the blank is going on?” Or, “Who’s on first?”
Compound that with Covid deniers and vaccine deniers during a pandemic and you end up with a World Series in search of a ballpark. Encourage unhealthy living styles with popular culture and “you can’t always get what you want.” No sir. Add in a healthy dose of woo-woo medicine now institutionalized in yet another government agency and you have a recipe for confusion more potent that any religious zealot has ever developed.
What the hell is the average person to do when they get seriously ill? I don’t know but neither does anyone else I’ve discovered.
Costello: I throw the ball to Who.
Abbott: Naturally.
Costello: Now you ask me.
Abbott: You throw the ball to Who?
Costello: Naturally.
Abbott: That’s it.
Costello: Same as you! Same as YOU! I throw the ball to who. Whoever it is drops the ball and the guy runs to second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to What. What throws it to I Don’t Know. I Don’t Know throws it back to Tomorrow. Triple play. Another guy gets up and hits a long fly to Because. Why? I don’t know. He’s on third and I don’t give a darn!
Abbott: What?
Costello: I said I don’t give a darn.
Abbott: Oh, that’s our shortstop.
